Climate Friendly Bike Program Launches
Through a unique partnership the National Parks Conservation Association is providing 20 new mountain bikes available for check-out through Sustainable Actions bike-library program.  These bikes are specifically set aside for staff to commute to work and so reduce carbon emissions and reduce parking congestion.  Each bike is fitted with an odometer so that mileage can be tracked and carbon emissions reduction calculated.   Temporary employees who could benefit from being able to commute to work without a car are encouraged to sign up.  This bike program requires a $40 deposit that will be refunded when the bike is returned.  All bikes come with bike helmet and lock/chain.  The Climate Friendly Bike Program was inspired by people like you who asked for transportation alternatives.  Please contact Patrick Hagarty by cell phone (301.325.5934) or email (phagarty@naturebridge.org) if you’d like to sign up or have any questions or concerns regarding implementation of the project or getting/receiving bikes. (C. Knipper - 7/19)

Yosemite National Park Continues Work on Pavement Preservation Project
Work to Occur in El Portal, Crane Flat, Hodgdon Meadow, and Foresta Areas (Expect up to 15 Minute Delays)

El Portal Road
This week crews will be microsealing the larger parking lots along the El Portal Road with minimal delays 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Rancheria and Old El Portal Areas
For this week (July 18th thru July 22nd, Monday thru Friday), crews will continue with microsealing and chipsealing throughout the community from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Next week, July 11th thru 15th crews will be microsealing various roads in Rancheria and Old El Portal from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.   For each work area, crews will be installing signs to notify residents when work is occurring on a particular street or parking area, so please move your vehicles when crews are working in your area.  Next week is the beginning of the final surface treatment, so some of the narrow roads will require closure for up to 4-hours as the material cures, while others may require detours.   Also, unless it is an emergency, please do not drive on the new pavement until you are directed to do so.

El Portal Trailer Court
Microsealing the eastern 1/2 of the El Portal Trailer Court (East of the main entrance-exit to the Trailer Court) on July 18th and the western 1/2 (West of the main entrance-exit to the Trailer Court) of the El Portal Trailer Court on July 19th.

El Portal Administrative Parking Complex (Paved Asphalt Parking Areas Related to Maintenance-Waste Water Treatment Plant-Planning-Project Management-Human Resources-Contracting-Dispatch-Safety-etc.)
Crews are planning to microseal the first lift of all the paved asphalt surfaces July 23rd (Saturday) and 24th (Sunday) and the 2nd lift of microseal on the July 30th and 31st.  Please advise your staff they can move the government vehicles  to concrete areas, because we are only crack sealing and patching the asphalt surfaces.

Crane Flat Campground
Crews will be sweeping the chipseals on Monday, July 18th and fog sealing on Friday July 22nd.

Foresta Road East (Foresta Community)
Chipsealing will occur on Monday, July 18th, between the Big Oak Flat Road and the Dumpster Area.

Hodgdon Area
Crews will be sweeping up the excess chips on July 22nd and 25th.  Please follow the guidance of the traffic control staff. (M. Pieper - 7/19)

Did you know that @YosemiteScience has delivered a daily tweet for the past two years? This official park Twitter account celebrates its second anniversary today. @YosemiteScience content, reaching more than 1,850 followers, highlights the park’s natural and cultural resources. So, what was its first tweet? “There have been 11 bears hit by vehicles this year. Help our Deaf Visitors
Hundreds of Deaf people visit Yosemite every year, but most miss out on our rich program offerings because they don’t know about the services Yosemite provides.   You can help us get the word out in two ways:  1) Share our YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u90tZfs9Bjc and 2) Tell any Deaf visitors you encounter about yose_deaf_services@nps.gov  For more information, or if you are a signer yourself (fluent or learning), contact this season’s Deaf Services Coordinator, Jessica Cole, via email or at (209) 372-0344. Wapama Falls Bridge Opened
On Friday July 15th at 1500 hours the Wapama Falls Bridge was re-opened. Wilderness travel has resumed in all of the Hetch Hetchy area.  With wilderness travel comes significant risk. Yosemite is still experiencing spring run-off condition. The flow of water is as unpredictable as the Sierra weather. Know your options and plan alternative routes. Remember, you have the choice to turn back and re-plan if you encounter conditions that you deem too risky. (R. Davis - 7/18)

Wawona Northwest Prescribed Fire
Yosemite National Park fire managers are planning the Wawona Northwest Prescribed Fire for late July, 2011.  The primary objective for this 800 acre prescribed fire is to reduce hazardous fuel loading in the Wawona Wildland Urban Interface area.  Burning this segment will form a barrier to the community of Wawona from the spread of unwanted wildfire approaching from Turner Ridge to the north and partially from the South Fork Merced River drainage to the northwest.  The segment is directly adjacent to several government and private home and structures.  This project ties together multiple and previous historical research, natural and prescribed fires, and mechanical thinning.
Another objective for this project is to conduct ecosystem restoration by applying fire to this fire adapted landscape. Prior to the exclusion of fire over 100 years ago, fire was a natural process that played an integral role in shaping the landscape of Yosemite.  Densities of shade tolerant tree species, such as white fir and incense cedar, and forest litter and duff have accumulated to unnatural and unaccepted levels in the absence of fire.  Through the application of fire, a more natural vegetation composition can be achieved that would likely support a surface fire, but less likely to support crown fire.
Before the actual date of the prescribed fire crews will be on the ground preparing the segment for fire operations, including measuring fuel moistures.  Other pre-fire planning will include working with the Mariposa County Air Pollution Control District for issuing a burn permit, and timing the project for a weather system that will facilitate good air quality, and move and disperse smoke into the atmosphere away from the community.
This fire segment is identified in the 2005 Yosemite Fire Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement and re included in the Multi-year Strategic Fuels Management Plan.  The goals and objectives for this project conform to the park’s General Management Plan and Vegetation Management Plan.  More details concerning this prescribed project will be available as planning continues. Wuchner - 7/18)
