14th Annual Apple Picking Celebrated in Yosemite National Park
What:
Yosemite National Park continues a public awareness campaign coupled with
progressive bear management techniques and research into the behavior
patterns of bears and people in the park. Yosemite has seen a significant
decrease in bear incidents since beginning these efforts. Yearly apple
picking in Yosemite provides an opportunity to learn about the behavior of
Yosemite’s bears from National Park Service Rangers. Apple picking removes
apples from historic apple orchards that attracts bears to this non-native
food source and developed areas. By removing the apples, bears will return
to their natural food sources found throughout the park and not become
exposed to humans and their food.
